About the book
In a prehistoric landscape shaped by scarcity and movement, Mavren serves as interpreter when Cala and her young son, Darek, arrive at a settlement with little more than carried knowledge and an account no one can fully verify.
Their story reaches back to Arak, a maker of tools whose skill became both protection and captivity under the rule of Boran. As words, techniques, and obligations pass from one group to another, Mavren learns that translation can preserve a life or narrow it, and that every record may become a map for someone else's violence.
Community is a deeply material novel of migration, knowledge, power, and the small repeated labours by which strangers become necessary to one another.
