About the book

An anonymous painted garden is brought to Assia Aït Idir because no celebrated name can make it valuable. She sees instead a viewpoint that should not exist: the landscape, its labour and its omissions have been arranged for one particular eye.

When a historian dies during a private preview, the picture becomes evidence in a contest over authorship, public memory and a foundation whose future depends on the right version of the past.

With Paris gallery owner Léa Bernard, Assia follows the panel through contracts, service routes and cultivated ground. The question is no longer whether the picture records the garden, but whether the garden was made to resemble the picture.

The first Inconvenient Picture Mystery: a literary detective novel about looking, ownership and the cost of an attractive history.
