About the book

Adrian Amsler has promised an old friend dinner in Varna. Before the meal can begin, Petar Vasilev is found dying in an old transport office.

The hotel owner seems to have been busy elsewhere all evening. Femke Veldkamp, a Dutch truck driver with a doctorate in engineering, begins to examine the jobs that filled those hours. Adrian, a former aid doctor who has trained in Buddhist practice, must examine what he remembers of them.

As their stay lengthens, other people’s work acquires names, an apparently impossible journey changes shape, and the cost of asking questions comes due. In the cab and among the rock-cut rooms of Aladzha, there are also things neither of them knows how to explain.
